Solana is operating with a 250 millisecond target slot time, with the change taking effect at epoch 1037 on September 18, according to CryptoSlate's review of the engineering changelog. An early sample in that report measured about 266 milliseconds per produced slot and a skipped-slot rate of roughly 0.05%.
Shorter slots give each leader less time to receive transactions, pass production to the next leader and repair missing data. They also change cadence more directly than capacity. The article cites the draft SIMD-0525 design, which sets a 62.5 million compute-unit limit at 250 milliseconds and 50 million at 200 milliseconds, leaving the nominal ceiling near 250 million compute units per second.
A move to 200 milliseconds remained conditional in the cited material. The relevant test is not a single clean sample, but sustained measurements of slot duration, skipped slots, transaction landing, leader handoffs and behavior across client implementations and infrastructure providers.
This is an implementation and coordination test, not evidence of a current network failure. The next decision should be based on longer observations and the official feature gates.
